right now and I hope you can’t stop thinking about the characters and their stories.
The last 10 years since my memoir was published have been crazy and instructive, and I want to offer a few reflections.
When you’re in prison you’re completely reliant on the kindness of strangers. And people are rightly scared when they're behind bars.
But I’ve seen incarcerated women share what little commissary they had to ensure others had tampons & could call their kids.

80% of people accused of a crime in the US are too poor to afford a lawyer
(obviously this doesn’t map to actual crime being committed - rich people unlikely to be policed)...
So poor people are overwhelmingly who ends up in prison/jail in the U.S.
Prison populations have much higher incidences of 1) mental illness 2) substance use disorder 3) survival of serious trauma, than does the “general population”...
