📢HOLD ON! If we open the Constitution to end Citizens United, we open it up to right wing causes. How you ask? I for one am not confident that there won't be a legal fight to allow mixing and matching of amendments. For example many of the calls for a Convention of States from
the right call to end Citizens United too. Here is a warning from Arn Pearson at the Center for Media and Democracy, a watchdog group based in Madison, Wisc., is closely tracking the movement.
He describes the campaign for a constitutional convention as “a very live threat.” “If between the groups they get to 34 states,” he says, “there is really nothing preventing them from aggregating those calls even if they’re not identical, and pushing for a convention
📢Please share. This thread is about the Amendments Convention advocacy group @AmericanPromise. In my last thread, I pointed out that these advocacy groups risk irrelevancy & perhaps significant loss in support with the busy end of the regular session in state legislatures and
the 2018 fall elections which may be the most important mid-term elections in history. I also pointed out their boastful claims about the numbers of voters they say support them. Large rallies or groups attract much higher numbers of people who are more easily sold on a sales
pitch than smaller groups. When they are able to get popular public figures like @RWPUSA, BenCohen or @BillMoyers, it makes the job of selling their pitch, no matter how misleading it is, even easier. Like the Koch backed COSProject effort to call a Convention of States,
Fantastic information from Indivisible on what to do if Mueller's investigation is disrupted starting with Emergency Rallies that have been organized across the country and beyond. indivisible.org/resource/if-tr…
IIRC, when this threat first surfaced months ago, I believe the call was to hit the streets and stay in the streets until the rule of law was reinstated along with Mueller's investigation and that means, restoring any disruption. My fear at this point isn't that Trump will fire
Mueller or Rosenstein. Trump is alternating between tantrums and heavy duty pouting until his advisers can come up with a more legitimate pathway to disrupt the investigation that doesn't quite cross that line.
Mississippi & Maryland are in a safe zone for now. Iowa, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Minnesota & Kentucky are STILL in the danger zone. Please call your legislators & tell them you oppose an Article V Convention. Scroll down for links & contact information.
Reasons to oppose a convention:
In this politically divisive climate it's inevitable regardless of what measures are put in place to prevent it, that it would turn into a runaway convention; it is unlikely it could be contained or limited or that delegates would honor boundaries.
In addition, there is nothing to stop a convention from reducing the number of states required to ratify amendments; a balanced budget amendment would be economically devastating to the country, causing deepened, extended recessions & higher unemployment.
An Article V convention risks a complete re-write of the Constitution and signals the end of our democratic Republic. Advocates for a convention are dangerously close to succeeding. There are currently 28 states that have passed legislation and have filed their applications
for a Constitutional Convention (ConCon), also known as a Convention of States (COS). Four more states, South Carolina, Iowa, Kentucky and Pennsylvania are all at various stages of passing legislation for an Article V convention.
✍️ People fight this everyday. It's been a life-long struggle for many. People have struggled in this country since it's birth. It is the root cause for what ails us today. It has far-reaching implications for this country and many other democracies around the world.
I came across an 'Alt-Right Playbook' that gives advice on how to have a conversation with ‘alt-right’ members. It’s a 3-part series but I didn’t make it all the way through Part 1.
There is a lot of confusion about the whole spectrum of conservativism & libertarianism & where the alt-right fits in this spectrum. JMO & you don’t have to agree but the ‘new’ Republican Party & virtually all of the factions within are infused to some degree with racism.
I wish we could stop calling them the #GOP or Republican Party. They aren't anymore. They are really a foul mixture of libertarians, white supremacists, foreign & domestic oligarchs and an extremist religious cult.
We are being ruled by a fascist theocracy led by an authoritarian dictator who jokes about removing presidential term limits. I'm not laughing. And they were all installed illegitimately by a foreign enemy! It's been more than a year, but it seems they are all on track to
achieve their goals. I worry. I worry a lot about the future. I wonder if people see the big picture or understand the strength or the magnitude of the forces working against democracy in this country. I worry a lot about what we don't know.
Whatever happened to DACA? The program was to have ended March 5th. Two federal judges have temporarily blocked the plan. Some are speculating that may buy some time beyond March 5th. JMO but I think we have already lost them.
Trump's MO is to waffle back and forth with more unpopular decisions but in the end Trump will do whatever Trump wants. And what Trump wants is whatever Trump's base wants. He was willing to take some flack with the proposal Dems turned down, but he won't be so generous
during subsequent rounds of budget negotiations. When I use the word generous, I mean in the context of a sadistic authoritarian or dictator or malignant narcissist. The stable genius doesn't like being turned down. The king of the cult does the turning down
