The idea that trans women need to pressure anyone into sex is so laughably absurd. The desire for trans bodies is insatiable. The problem is that it’s not public. It’s on porn and escort sites, the DM’s of every trans woman, in low whispers in bars and on public transportation. To be a trans woman is having to constantly navigate the simultaneity of strangers’ desire for us AND the shame interlaced with that desire. Their desire requires secrecy, darkness, denial, lies, and all too often, violence, to hide from the shame.

The worst thing about Twitter, and social media in general, is never knowing ahead of time how much attention a post will get. I always treat this app like I'm talking to a few like-minded friends. When it goes beyond that all I feel is profound anxiety. It's something I've thought about for many year, the difference between speech and writing and how so many of the issues on this app stem from how they're conflated:

I love all the love @Disclosure_Doc is getting, but I’d like to clarify that Netflix did not produce or commission our doc. They purchased the streaming rights for less than half of what it cost to make and relied on us to promote it. Most of us paid our own way to Sundance. Director Sam Feder and the rest of the producers decided to accept the deal because it meant the widest possible audience. It meant trans people around the world could see it instantly, and in private. This team was always motivated by impact, not profit.

The ONLY way this and taking a freaking livestock dewormer rather than simply masking and getting the vaccine makes any sense is that the right’s entire MO is based wholly on distrust of and opposition to the left, which to them includes science and expertise. That’s it. I can’t stop thinking about the ivermectin insanity. Taking livestock dewormer paste recommended by quacks, threatening doctors who won’t prescribe it, but refuse the vaccine? That’s how deep the paranoia and anti-left/science/authority mania goes.

It’s exceedingly surreal to have transitioned 10 years ago, find myself happier & healthier than ever, have better relationships with friends & family, be a better and more engaged citizen, and yes, even more productive ... and to then see strangers pathologize that choice. My being trans almost never comes up. It’s a fact about my past that has relatively little bearing on my present, except that it made me more empathetic, more engaged in social justice. How does it hurt anyone else? What about my peace demands vitriol, violence, protections?

I’m still stunned and angry that SAG took insurance away from people during the pandemic, including myself, for not working enough ... when productions were shut down. They have a model where your eligibility for insurance is based on your previous year’s earnings, which I get, but to kick people off during a pandemic *because* productions are shut down is ludicrous.

Something I particularly love about my marriage right now is my wife’s ability to lift me up when I’m down, in perfectly attuned and effective ways, and the knowledge I can do the same for her. That’s deeply comforting. She just gently related how the fight for gay marriage awakened her politically, and BLM radicalized her, as a way of finding some little bit of hope in all the pain of this anti-trans nonsense. The long term impact of moments that call out for empathy.

It’s pointless to list all the many, many ways my life became exponentially harder after transition, but what really gets me is that what he really means by “concrete benefits” is ... not being yelled at by liberals on social media. That’s his big fear. That has to be it, right? I can’t think of what else he could mean. We still receive massive hate from everyone else, but yes, we are sometimes given extra, sometimes unearned, latitude from well meaning people online. Is that what he finds so objectionable? A bit of kindness?
