Thread. The first birth I attended, the mother wanted a natural birth. I could tell right away the midwife was not on the same page. She hooked the mother up to a CTG and promised it was just for 20 minutes or so. Over an hour later the mother was begging for it to be removed.
The midwife kept saying just a few minutes more. As labour progressed she wanted to move around and the CTG was really irritating her. The midwife said she had to keep it on because she (the midwife) had an obligation to the baby and needed to keep an eye on it. When we went on
break I queried this. I asked what she meant. She said it was the law and we had to abide by it. Our first and foremost duty was to protect that baby. I didn't know it at the time, but this law was the 8th amendment. I watched this mother navigate the cascade of interventions
