Some personal reflections on the job market. No, woe is not me. I'm blessed---lucky, really. But a 🧵 on the job market experience. First, some context. I've been applying broadly for four years. 331 apps for both senior/junior jobs. Of those 331: 10 interviews. One offered, which I wanted to take but it came too late for me to move. Another I accepted.

I think my file is pretty good? But yeah, it's hard.

This will probably be a vignette on {peacesciencer} before too long, but here's a companion function to add CoW ccodes to your G-W dyad/state-year data.

svmiller.com/peacesciencer/… The reason why there'll probably be a vignette: it's imperative for peace scientist researchers bouncing between state system membership data to make one of them the "master." That's a design decision you should formalize early into your process. svmiller.com/blog/2021/01/a…

{peacesciencer} now finally has a function for the UCDP armed conflict data. It's in pilot mode (so user beware before running wild with it), but it seems to be doing what I think it should be doing. A few caveats:

1. You can go willy-nilly with the UCDP armed conflict data and include everything, but I wouldn't. You should probably target what types of conflicts you want. Use the type argument to your advantage.

I know this is old hat for Bayesian people, but it's kind of cool to use priors to assess how sensitive a statistic when p(x =1) is really small. Here: the effect of unemployment in the UK on attitudes about immigration. Just 38 unemployed people in sample of 1905. Image But, if you were so sure of the effect of unemployment on attitudes toward immigrants/immigration, you can bootstrap a distribution for a prior in a Bayesian model Image
