Waiting for a delayed flight, some idle thoughts on what Google needs to fix itself:

1) Find a replacement for Sundar. This person needs to be both able if articulating a coherent vision for Google as a company, *and* inspire great engineers to want to work on great problems.
2) Google is a strange dysfunctional conglomerate. Search/Ads is/was one of the best businesses ever: Extremely high margin, network effects etc. - at the price of requiring heavy R&D for scale, search quality etc. -- a lot of early Google culture was built for such a business.
Many other businesses at Google (devices, cloud, enterprise docs) are very different: lower margins, more sales effort, tight qualitative customer feedback needed etc.

Neither early Googles culture nor pay scales are well-adapted.

Direct Action Day: The Valor of Gopal Patha and the Retribution of Hindus (Thread)🧵

“Quit or Die!” – Gandhi warns Hindus
Direct Action Day' was a call for a show of strength by the Muslim League. The secularist narrative, the Gem of Bharat MK Gandhi instead of condemning the perpetrators of violence, blames Hindu intellectuals and spiritual leaders, who were either far away from the scene or dead when the 'Great Calcutta Killings' took place.

THE PLANNING:
-Jinnah chose Kolkata (Calcutta) for his Direct-Action day because he wanted to have Kolkata in Pakistan. Kolkata was a major business city of India at that time, & Jinnah didn’t want to lose Kolkata!
The mission to Make Kolkata Hindu-free was given to Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, who was Chief Minister of Bengal, & loyal to Jinnah. At that time, The Muslim population in the Bengal province was 54%, with a Muslim League government in power under Provincial Autonomy, 1935.

-Suhrawardy started to execute his plan on 16th August 1946. A strike was declared by him and all Muslims closed their shops & gathered in masjid. Muslim shops were marked to save them from being looted.
Some Muslims were seen looting Hindu shops in Red Cross uniforms.Suhrawardy assured the Muslim mobs, that he has instructed the Police to not come in the way of their mission.

-Suhrawardy took charge of the control room at Calcutta Police Headquarters at Lal Bazar and instructed the police not to take any action against the Muslim rioters. Police were sent where Hindus were fighting back.Image
Image
THE EXECUTION:
-On the morning of 16 August 1946 over a lakh Muslim rallied the streets of Calcutta with lathis, spears, daggers, knives, firearms, empty soda bottles, kerosine, rags soaked in petrol etc. A Hindu shop of arms and weapons near the Muslim League office was attacked first. it was looted and burnt to ashes. The owner and his employees were beheaded.

-Hindus were chopped down like vegetables. The streets were strewn with dead bodies, small children were hurled down roofs, some boiled in oil, others burnt alive. Many Hindu women and young girls were kidnapped and taken away as sex slaves.

-In Metiaburz area, now known as Mini Pakistan, about 600 Odiya labourers were beheaded by League leader Syed Abdullah Farooqi and his mob inside Keshav Ram Cotton Mill. Two labourers, who had their hands chopped off, escaped.

-On 16th August thousands of Hindus were killed & Hindu women were raped. Killings continued on 17th August The unabated killings resulted in over 10,000 killed in Calcutta alone, 15,000 injured.Records say that many bodies were thrown into underground sewers, the Ganga and city canals. Actual number of casualties must be higher.Image

THE HINDU RETRIBUTION:
-It was expected that Hindus would not fight back. But on 18th August, A Hindu decided to resist the Muslim mobs! He was a Bengali Brahmin & his name was Gopal Mukherjee. His friends used to call him “Patha”. Gopal was 33-year-old that time, & a staunch nationalist, and firm follower of Subash Chandra Bose & critique of Gandhi’s principle of non-violence. Gopal used to run a street organization Bharat Jatiya Bahini. He had 500 - 700 people in his team - all were well-trained wrestlers.

-He was supported by SP Mookerjee and the Marwari community that dominated the economy of Calcutta and Bengal. Basanta’s team with his Bengalis and non-Bengali migrants from UP, Bihar and Odisha and Jugal Chandra Ghosh, owner of an akhara and of the Hindu Mahasabha fought back.

-On 18th Aug Gopal decided that they will do a counter attack on the Muslims. He called his wrestlers, gave them weapons. His words were “Kill 10 Muslims for every 1 Hindu!”. They made the rules that unlike Muslims they will not touch any enemy women and children. Gopal’s team killed each and every Muslim mobster who came to kill the Hindus & by the 19th, they had secured all Hindu colonies.

-They marked all Jehadis who killed Hindus on 16th and 17th August & attacked them on 20th August. They killed so many Muslims in 2 days, that by 21st, deaths of Muslims outnumbered the deaths of Hindus! The game had changed by 22nd August now! The Muslims were running away from Kolkata.Image

Even worse than soybean oil is heated soybean oil. If you feed mice heated soybean oil, they simultaneously lose weight and gain fat. Basically, it makes them go skinny-fat mode: muscle is converted to fat tissue. 👇
Image
(HSO in the figures below is heated soybean oil, USO = unheated soybean oil). Although the mice in the HSO group gained less weight overall than the mice in the USO group, the HSO mice exhibited a greatly increased level of fat mass in their bodies. Image
The study authors are wrong to state that normal people's diets don't contain soybean oil that has been heated as long as in the study. If you've ever worked in a restaurant, even a good one, you'll know that the cooking oil in fryers does not get changed all that often. It's also worth noting that vegetable and seed oils spontaneously oxidise at room temperature. The longer you keep them, the more oxidised they become.Image

Zotero is the best citation management tool for academic writing.

And it's new version — Zotero 7 — is now available for use.

Here's how to automate your citations and references with Zotero 7.

You can learn this workflow in 15 min:
Go to this link below and download the version compatible with your computer.

Link: zotero(dot)org/support/beta_builds (replace the word "dot" with ".")

Install the app on your computer.

If you already use Zotero 6, it will get updated with Zotero 7 without any loss of data. A screenshot of the webpage Zotero Beta Builds. A yellow arrow points to different versions of Zotero 7 beta.
Open your Zotero desktop app after you have installed it.

This is how your Zotero 7 interface would look like. Your collections from Zotero 6 will remain unaffected.

If you are using Zotero for the first time, you won't see any items in your library. A screenshot of Mushtaq's Zotero library.

Managing SARS-CoV-2-induced Brain Fog 😶‍🌫️

A recent review in Neurological Sciences by Gorenshtein et al. (2024) covers the efficacy of various treatments for brain fog triggered by SARS-CoV-2.

My takeaways:

1. Combination of Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and Luteolin:
- PEA: Functions by engaging cannabinoid receptors both directly and indirectly, making it an alternative if CBD and THC are restricted in your area. As a neuroinflammation antagonist within the N-acylethanolamine family, PEA has been shown to down-regulate TNF alpha and modulate mast cells.
- Luteolin: Known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cytoprotective properties.

2. Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation:
- Used for decades, these techniques are backed by rigorously designed experimental studies, including sham-controlled trials:
- Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

3. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
- Particularly notable is a sham-controlled RCT involving 37 participants in the treatment group, which showed moderately strong improvements in cognitive outcomes. These results correlated with MRI evidence of enhanced perfusion and microstructural changes, alongside clinical improvements in pain and sleep quality.

These therapeutic approaches offer promising avenues for symptom management in patients experiencing cognitive challenges following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Understand CSS "fr" (fractional) Unit & why you should know about it

Open this thread to learn more 👇🧵
Understanding fr unit:

➡️ fr stands for "fractional unit" and it's a flexible way to distribute space within a container

➡️ It is a way to allocate space based on fractions of the available space.
How does fr unit work?

➡️ Say you have a grid container and you want three columns of equal width

➡️ You can simply set each column's width to 1fr, and CSS will divide the available space into three equal partsImage

I predict a divide, if more shooting people do create models with no lead shot, no raptor persecution, walk up birds with the quality of outdoor experience being the selling point not numbers and repetitive shooting of driven birds (my perspective others enjoy it, it has own
challenges and pleasures I suppose) with a more diverse vegetation structure, respect for wet peat, limits on fragmentation by tracks then reasons to object are reduced. At that point people like me will take a different view to those motivated by animal rights.
Add science based culling and exclusion which does not try to justify Magpie control for 'songbird' conservation, with less birds released, less grain fed, less rodenticide used, less or no tunnel traps used (unselective, kill other animals than target) then the divide is less.

Finding True Life
The theme that I woke up with this morning was “True Life” and what it will look like for the follower of Christ. The Lord pointed me to a few scriptures where He personally spoke about this theme in particular. But He also pointed me to the lives of His disciples and others as
recorded in the bible.

You see, when Jesus called His disciples and others like Paul to follow Him, they were all-in and gave up everything to follow Him. In every single case, the things that had previously defined their lives (the things that they had lived for) were no longer
