As a woman who has a car and drives daily, I've dealt with my fair share of men at auto body shops & gas station who prey on women. For my ladies, here's a thread on basic things you should know about fixing your car.

1. Know how to change your tires. for starters, sign up for roadside assistance. AAA is a great one. If you don't have roadside assistance it's important that you have a jack, a wrench + most importantly A SPARE TIRE. here's a link to help: bridgestonetire.com/tread-and-tren…

here's a video to visualize everything on changing tires — done by a woman:

2. know how to jump-start your car. In addition to your car having a jack, wrench & a spare tire, you should ALWAYS have jumper cables. Not just for yourself but to help others too!

2A. For your jumper cables, you should ALWAYS connect the positive side of your car battery to the positive to whoever you're giving a jump. Also, negative with negative.

3. Check the oil in your car. Lift the hood of the car, and check the dipstick. here's an article to give you a breakdown of how to do it: wikihow.com/Add-Oil-to-You…

4. Headlights and Taillights. if the light goes out, go to any car store and tell them the model of your car as the first step. from there you can check out this video for more info:

5. Brakes. Depending on how often you drive, you should be changing your brakes every 50K miles. Bc I drive a lot I change my brakes 1x a year. You can tell when you need new brakes when your wheel is shaking as you're stopping or if you have a delayed stop.

a bit of a tangent, if you're buying a new car, 12K miles is a good number to buy a car. More than 70K is not a good idea. Use @CarfaxReports or @autocheck to check out the car history.

1A. In regards to roadside assistance find out if your car insurance provides that as well before outsourcing with another company.

In addition to what I mention at #2 on things your car should have, you should have an emergency kit, which should have: a flashlight, first aid kit, blanket, water, warning triangles & some car snacks. You can never go wrong with car snacks.

This is another tangent, but unless you are a WRECKLESS driver and have been in a number of car accidents, your car insurance should not be more than $300 a month. Maybe even $200 depending on where you live.

Also, find a good mechanic. That might take some time bc some of them will try to rip you off. BUT DON'T TAKE THAT! Always try to negotiate down. my current mechanic is my family one, so we've known each other for years.

For all my ladies who live in PA, here's DOPE all-female mechanic shop! @girlsautoclinic! They also have a beauty bar called @clutchbeautybar !

Lastly, I want to remind ya'll that having a car is like having a kid. A lot of time, maintenance and money if not taken car of. its important to do your research.

Some1 brought up to me that it's important for your mechanic to break down the work they're doing *VERBATIM* + to make sure that you are there every step of the way. It matters. You want to make sure your car is in good hands. It also helps to get a 2nd opinion.
