I've been thinking & reading a lot about leadership & what makes a good leader the last few weeks (more on why later). Thought I would share just a couple of the more interesting recent papers I came across…of course much more reading ahead. Please feel free to send suggestions!

First, leadership & norms. #ChristianDippel & #StephanHeblich show how leaders shape beliefs & social norms using data on the FortyEighters (political refugees from Germany). So leaders can build positive social norms!! Can they also create negative ones?? nber.org/papers/w24656.…

Second, “Who Becomes a Politician?” Some of my very favorite political economists on whether a democracy can attract competent leaders & still keep broad representation. They say: YES!!! By #ErnestoDalBó #FredFinan @OlleFolke #TorstenPersson @johannarickne nber.org/papers/w23120

Third do women help women? Amazing data: 11 years of employer-employee data from >4000 private firms in Norway. Finds positive gender spillovers from higher-ranking to lower-ranking women but negative spillovers w/in ranks. By @AstridKunze & #AmaliaMiller

Last (for tonight) but not least: a nice theoretical paper about what makes a good leader. Coordination, communication, learning & leader resoluteness…. & the tradeoffs in all of these! Food for thought! By @MarkusEconomist #PatrickBolton & #LauraVeldkamp scholar.princeton.edu/sites/default/…

Just found #BenHermalin's chapter for #HandbkOrgEcon on leadership & corporate culture. Inspiring. Def read "What's Left?" Open questions I would love to work on: How do leaders shape culture? When do leadership battles lead to organizational schisms? ...
