Highlights of input by ICPC Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye at”Corruption and Illicit Exploitation and Trade of Africa’s Natural Resources:A case of Fisheries, Forestry & Wildlife”,a side event at the 32nd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Summit in Ethiopia.
2. Corruption is prevalent in almost every sector of African countries, Forestry is not an exception. In order to improve the revenue realised from Forestry, Member-States need to improve security, enhance information sharing and enforce stricter regulatory measures.
3. Member-States are advised to avoid negotiating long leases for exploitation of natural resources, they should be wary of entities that make claims that they will manage resources on behalf of citizens of their countries.
4. Member-States should also review the use of intangibles like consulting, technology and expertise which could be over priced.
5. Tax information should be exchanged and oversight improved in order to enhance tax revenue. - Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, #ICPC Chairman
