Plot twist! I’m #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk! Please share w/ #phycophiles who aren’t at #PSA2019 or maybe haven’t finished their morning beach walk yet…

#PhycologyWithoutApology @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae @protistologists

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae @protistologists I’m thrilled to be sharing my fav dissertation chapter (shh don’t tell the others) on the interactive effects of iron & heat stress on #Symbiodiniaceae

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae @protistologists In attempts to keep this in synch with my talk, I’m going to thank everybody first! This collaboration was formed through the @NSF #EAPSI program and thrived because of support from my science families at PSU & in Taiwan.

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae @protistologists @NSF The #Symbiodiniaceae are the star of this talk! They form symbioses with reef-building corals. Coral reef ecosystems would collapse without this!

#UnscienceAnAlgae #PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk #PSA2019

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae @protistologists @NSF I’m focusing on the nutrient cycling aspect of coral-algal symbiosis. Lack of nutrient availability often lowers the temperature coral #bleaching occurs. But these studies tend to only include macronutrients (C,N,P).

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk #PSA2019

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae @protistologists @NSF Trace metals are important to physiology too! But they are found in far less abundance (relative to macronutrients) so they are quite pesky to study.

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae @protistologists @NSF Iron is a cofactor for many biochemical functions. Hint hint, most of these are important for #Symbiodiniaceae survival to heat stress

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

My 1st ch found that #Symbiodiniaceae cannot withstand iron starvation. But they all alter their metallomes in response to iron stress differently (does not mimic phylogeny).

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

Today is all about #Breviolum! I chose to further investigate their responses to Fe stress bc B.psygmophilum & B.minutum are physiologically & eco distinct. Bp changes metallome in during Fe stress & Bm does not

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk #PSA2019

we had some technical difficulties... will finish publishing the rest of the planned tweets during the coffee break in 15 mins ;)

ALL culture work was done in a class 100 trace metal clean room. I could go on forever about the woes of TM clean work but will spare you (for now).

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae Breviolum need iron to beat the heat!! Only #Breviolum at high [Fe] could withstand heat stress. The low [Fe]*high temp treatments died :(

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae Bpsyg grows faster (at all treatments) & pumps more iron (& other metals) than Bmin. This happened 2 summers in a row!

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae Bpsyg pumps more iron (& other metals under heat stress)! Bmin doesn’t change much aside from decreasing Ni at high temp/mid Fe.

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae Bpsyg is a BEAST! Has a higher temp threshold before exhibiting heat stressed metallome. If #dinoflagellates had arms, Bmin would have noodle arms!

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

@Symbiodiniaceae @PSUScience @PSAAlgae Both species showed photophysiological resilience. At low [Fe], they increase photoprotective pigments & slow PSII electron re-oxidation (tau). Both lessen the Fe-demand on photosynthesis.

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

Bottom line, sufficient iron is a must for survival during coral bleaching events. #Breviolum have avenues of coping w/ Fe-stress but get stretched too thin when also exposed to heat stress

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk #PSA2019 #MetalsInBiology

The rest of my dissertation supports the theme of trace metals being important for coral-algal symbiosis. Happy to chat about the other culture work, omics, & fieldwork that have lead me to these conclusions!

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk @PSAAlgae #PSA2019

@PSAAlgae Ate lunch I realized I (almost) forgot to include the two most important tweets. Oops, here I go again!

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk #PSA2019

Shameless self-promotion: I’m on track to defend my PhD in spr ’20. I’m on the lookout for new collabs & a home for my postdoc yrs. Happy to chat all things algal culturing, eco-phys, nutrients & climate change.

#PhycologyWithoutApology #LiveTweetingMyPSATalk #PSA2019

If you made it this far into the thread, THANK YOU! I’m stoked on science & thankful that people are willing to read my story. Massive thanks to @turnkira for help with the live tweeting!
