I've grown to believe that @googlemaps plays a big factor in making our planet more polluted by chosing routes that are absurdly longer just to satisfy its flawed algorithms. Here are some examples of that. Below it suggests a route nearly twice as long as possible to save 3min.

Here, @googlemaps suggests a route that is both slower and much longer, just because it involves 500m less unpaved roads.

Here's one of my favourites. Here, it suggests going back and forth on a ferry just to cross the street. Alternatively, you can go around.

It's also common to suggest "overly safe" ways to make a u-turn, by for example driving for 8km around in a forest.

And you might think that it's ridiculous and people won't drive this way, but not everyone checks the route before starting to drive and some use voice commands and don't even have the option to do so. Drive safe, drive near, save fuel, trust no app. <3
