Reasons why the comparisons between Marianne Williamson and Donald Trump are completely off.

[Short Thread.]

1)

Trump was a genuine celebrity before entering politics. Williamson was known by a small number of aficionados.

2)

Trump was leading the GOP field with around 20% of the vote at this point in the primaries.

Williamson polls below 1%.

3)

Trump was capitalizing on a powerful stew of racial resentment and hatred of political elites.

Williamson is capitalizing on a form of new-agey spiritualism that’s powerful… in a few hippy neighborhoods around the country.

4)

Trump was able to claim (however spuriously) that he had tremendous executive experience as a successful entrepreneur.

Williamson can claim… nothing in any way analogous.

Upshot:

Yes, it’s fine to be treat Williamson as a form of comic relief even though she would be a complete disaster if actually elected.

Why?

Because there’s zero chance she’ll be the Democratic nominee. And we all need a little laughter in these dark times.

[The End.]
