SPM's foresight in creating this homeland for Bengali Hindus and stonewalling the 'Sovereign Bengal' idea was proved in just two years by the persecution of the 29% Hindus in East Pakistan,culminating in the horrendous state-sponsored anti-Hindu pogrom (not riot) of
February-March 1950 in which an estimated 50,000 Hindus were killed,countless women raped,property destroyed and the entire Hindu middle class driven out. Jogen Mandal,a Central Minister of Pakistan,was forced to resign and ran away to West Bengal.
At the time SPM was a minister
in Nehru's cabinet. He pleaded with Nehru either for claiming extra land from Pakistan for the refugees or for an exchange of population. Nehru did neither but inked a stupid pact with Liaquat Ali to stop the atrocities,in spite of knowing that the pogrom was engineered by the
Pakistani state. This was Nehru's one despicable and inexcusable act of perfidy against Bengali Hindus. His pet historians have hidden it. SPM resigned in protest and with help from the RSS proceeded to create the Bharatiya Jan Sangh,forerunner of the BJP. The rest is history.
After SPM died in Sheikh Abdullah's captivity in June 1953,doubtless with Nehru's collusion,West Bengal was agog with grief. It took nine hours (usual time 45 minutes) to bring his body from Dum Dum Airport to his home,such was the crowd on the streets. Then the Communists in
Bengal mounted an agitation against a one-paisa rise in tram fares and burnt 15 trams in one day in July 1953. There are reasons to believe that this was done with Nehru's blessing.
Great shame that now Bengali Hindu leaders of West Bengal are conspiring to destroy his image!
