‼️4 fcked up things Boris has already done to our communities and what YOU can do about it ‼️
BJ has issued a series of brutal ‘law and order’ policies as a flagship of his new govt.
In the last 20 days he has:
1. Drastic expansion of stop & search
2. 20k more police
3. 10k new prison cells
4. Ending the practice of serving half your sentence in the community.
Home Sec Priti Patel says she wants criminals to ‘feel terror’. Is this about keeping our communities safe? No. Here’s why:
#1 The Home Office’s own figures show increasing stop&search has NO significant impact in reducing violence 🙄
#2 According to College of Policing research, stop&search under section 60 (the powers BJ expanded) only find a weapon 3% of the time. Thats a 97% FAILURE RATE 🤦🏽♀️
#3 And prison? Custodial sentences harm those who are incarcerated, seriously hurt their families and communities and just DONT WORK.
The UK has the biggest prison population in Western Europe - it’s grown by 82% over the past 30 years and it hasn’t made us any safer ❌
So all this for WHAT?
1. Stop&search won’t reduce violence but WILL increase the harassment of black and brown communities by the police.
Black people are 40 TIMES more likely to be stopped than their white counterparts - this racism has *increased* over the last 5 years🤬
2. Ramping up stop&search is a threat to ALL our freedoms. Junior police can now issue section 60s for up to 48 hours over whole areas if they think violence ‘may’ occur.
This is the scrutiny Boris requires for police to detain + search any of us. NO SUSPICION REQUIRED. 😑
3. Tbh, this makes sense for a govt led by a racist who are scared of public disapproval and potential unrest. Preparing the ground for a crackdown as drastic as they can get away with 🤯.
WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO ABOUT IT!!
Govt scrutiny on widespread abuse of police power has gone out the window with Boris - it’s up to *us* to keep them in check.
➡️ Say NO to the Boris govt expanding policies that make poverty and inequality worse - and then put people in cages to deal with the consequences of that poverty.
