The last days i was added to a "agrar-troll/lobbyist"-list. And now there is the question - is it a bad thing to work with farmers & love my job? While it is "in" to blame them for climate change, animal abuse or using pesticides? A thread about the challenge our farmer & future.
This year we had a training for animal welfare & undocked pigs for teacher at agrar school - and they are worrieng about the future and the frustration of our young farmers. They work so hard, it is a big thing to run a farm, they see the mountain of requirements & pressure.
When i have animal signals trainings and i talk to the young farmers - they feel like this pic i took from facebook. The love their home, the farm, the work. They work with high-tech & high-education level. But they feel: Will it be ever enough? Will there be acceptance for us?
There are a lot of charts/diagramms... that show: That there is a huge challenge to feed the world. And it is expected - that one farmer can feed more and more people. That he and his family can rise their efficiency, their work load, their documentation: Sustainable & low price?
But more efficiency, more animal welfare, more sustainability needs ... further investment. A lot of money, a lot of motivation and a lot of more work. But our farmers are getting older - what will happen, if he young farmers say no to take the farms, the challenge? Data: EU COM
And there is a proposal - that sustainable & animal welfare labels will be the future, the rescue, whatever. I see the rise of paperwork. I see the rise to "lable the farmer". There are the "good farmers" now working organic/outdoor (1-3 % market share?) & the "bad farmers" :-(.
But - where are the farmers, the next generation that will/is willing to feed the world? Who is willing to take oft the challenge, each day, each, week, for years, for decades? We love the idea of small, idylic farmes, but we need ..? ted.com/talks/louise_f…
