For every Proud Boy marauding the streets there’s at least a dozen White people who aren’t as overtly proud of their White supremacist beliefs but will quietly vote Republican til the day they die for the sake of White wealth, power, patriarchy and privilege.
In other words...
Really you could just skip cable news analysis of the Proud Boy vs. AntiFa showdown altogether and just watch BlacKkKlansman if you really want to understand what’s going on in the streets and how it translates into the broader sociopolitical climate.
Fighting fascism isn’t new and neither is the bothsideism false equivalence that gets trotted out for the sole purpose of discouraging anti-fascist people from making themselves seen and heard.
The other thing that isn’t new is no matter how many fascist/White supremacist/Neo-Nazi/Confederate rallies they hold they still have to elect like-minded people to office to put their apartheid fantasies into political action. That’s how the GOP’s Southern Strategy was born.
They came to the pertinent conclusion that white sheets, burning crosses and marauding the streets equaled bad press and bad for business so they traded all that in for suits and tax cut rhetoric. Less risk with a much higher yield on their investment.
They’ve effectively mainstreamed White rage and resentment within the Republican Party to the extent that their voters don’t have to join any additional hate groups to signify their status within Whiteness™️, consume hate speech or maintain White power. All they need is a VOTE.
Bottom line is don’t ever let Republicans dissociate themselves from the White supremacist movement that’s brought them this far, they’ve done tremendous damage from the privacy of the voting booth and the inevitable result is White supremacist fascists marauding the streets.
