For anyone who cites the GERS figures as illustrating how it shows independence for Scotland would be impossible, I want to see suggestions of how we change it. Because either the figures are wrong or the current democratic settlement is broken.
Note I posted about this last year including @kevverage and @holland_tom as I was replying to tweets asking what needs tobe done because if we are so completely screwed financially then we should be proposing solutions.
@kevverage @holland_tom There always seems a hint of joy in the tone of those opposed to independence in the figures - see the #gersmas trend today. But we should all be aiming no matter what your position on independece is to have a country that is financially sound.
@kevverage @holland_tom If we really are the economic basket case of Europe despite the natural resources, then we are all doing something monumentally wrong, and getting excited about that as a way of stopping a policy is bizarre.
@kevverage @holland_tom And for those in favour of independence, you need to either up your game on the economic analysis to show if the figures are wrong, and the White Paper precisely didn't do that or...
@kevverage @holland_tom Provide a clear indication of how independence will change the situation, and just saying independence would be magic isn't enough. The sheer poverty of debate round this, which reflects much other political debate, makes today very sad as...
@kevverage @holland_tom We see people content to just accept something where we apparently create 60% of the UK debt in a year, and yet aren't bathing in public services that have taps for milk, honey, and Irn Bru.
@kevverage @holland_tom Part of me leans to independence because we currently have power with no real responsibility as regards this. It becomes a mere discussion point rather than the driving force in public policy. And while I am tempted to just shout a plague on both your houses, we have to be better
