THREAD: The disaster happening in the Amazon rainforest is propelling us closer towards climate catastrophe. But this didn't happen out of nowhere. We must begin by looking at the fascist Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, and his crusade against environmental regulations. 1/5

The destruction of the rainforest is largely related to an explosion in cattle ranching. These fires are not part of some random tragedy. This situation is highly political, and tackling it will require radical political action. The ramifications of inaction will be immense. 2/5

And it isn’t just Bolsonaro to blame. The 99,000-tonne annual beef quota in the proposed EU-Mercosur trade deal is one example that exposes the unsustainability of current meat consumption levels and the intl trade regime. The EU, the US govt, and others are just as culpable. 3/5

The Amazon rainforest is home to more than a million indigenous people. It generates over 20% of the world’s oxygen and 10% of the world’s known biodiversity. It’s also a gigantic carbon sink! We must save the Amazon for the sake of all its inhabitants, and for our planet. 4/5

I want to again put on record my solidarity with Brazil's former president, Lula da Silva. He's been a political prisoner for over 500 days now. Had he not been unjustly locked up, the situation today would be very different. We must keep fighting for his freedom. #LulaLivre 5/5
