The freedom Jesus talks about ain’t **nothing** like the freedom we peddle through this scared-shitless hyper-individualistic thing we call “American values” —
and it’s high time we differentiate the two.
God commands human beings to take care and responsibility in being stewards of that creation, to free the earth from the bonds of destructive human activity. (Genesis 2:15)
God’s people are called not oppress the immigrant among them — and, in fact, to treat immigrants as nothing less than citizens, and free them from the systemic oppression that evil imposes.
(Leviticus 19:33)
Mary the mother of Jesus sings that the arrogant will be humbled; the proud will be ashamed; the rich will be sent away empty; the powerful will be torn down from their thrones –– freeing those in bondage to prejudice and sin.
(Luke 1:46–55)
This freedom extends to our own identity: The wide spectrum of gender and its diverse norms are radically welcomed and holy in God’s sight.
(Isa 56:4–5; Matt 19:11–12; Acts 8:26–40)
The holy and divine work of God (through Jesus) is good news to the poor; release to the captives; and liberation to the oppressed –– in other words, pure and unadulterated freedom.
(Luke 4:16–19)
This freedom comes at a cost:
What will be truly judged is our actions towards the “least of these” — how we treat those in our midst who are hungry, thirsty, naked, a stranger, sick, or in prison is how we treat Jesus himself.
(Matthew 25:31–46)
but, ya know, progressives don’t know the bible and shit 🙄
