Jill Rutter, Brexit at UK in a Changing Europe. Any other stuff at Institute for Government. Full Fact fan. Very ex-civil servant. My views not theirs.

So just imagine you are a UK civil servant turned up at your office today - if your holiday wasn't cancelled to cope with no deal planning...

first up you check your civil service code to remind yourself that you work for the Government of the day - but you are also supposed to "comply with the law and uphold the administration of justice"

what if you are asked to do things that you think violate the Code.. well then you are supposed to resolve it through an appeal to the Civil Service Commission .. and if that does not work, you resign (tough luck) gov.uk/government/pub…

BTW you are supposed to report criminal or unlawful activity to the police...

But how does this apply if govt is ignoring a law rather than acting in contravention of it? Interesting question for the Cabinet Secretary

Meanwhile, if you are a diplomat promoting "Global Britain" values, work for @tradegovuk promoting the UK's stable legal environment (or adherence to a rules based system), your job just got a whole lot tougher...

Woe you if you work for @DFID_UK on good governance, promoting the importance of democratic institutions and the rule of law, Ministers have managed to cut the moral high ground from beneath your feet

and ditto if you work for one of the law and order depts... if Ministers can pick and choose the laws they obey, why can't the rest of us..

Have Ministers really thought through the consequences of what they say - even a Minister usually as thoughtful as @michaelgove .....
