THREAD:
Happy #Sheftember!
It's my birthday this month, & every year for the last 8 years I've picked an organization & asked friends and family to donate to that cause rather than buy me gifts or drinks or whatever
This year I'm trying something different...
Lately I've been thinking about my journalism career - where it's taken me over the last 13 years - and how I'm grateful to mentors who became friends & friends who became mentors. How different journalism was when I got my first paycheck to where we are now in this industry...
This year I'm going to donate a small amount to a few organizations that better the journalism industry - rather than picking just one. But I'll list them here so if you want to celebrate #Sheftember, you can throw a few bucks to one or more of these organizations
A small reminder: I know not everyone has money to donate to charitable causes. But here's a tweet from last year with a list of orgs that need your time, clothes & creativity.
International Women's Media Foundation (@IWMF) is an NGO helping journalists who identify as women with funding, trainings, reporting trips & research. Their goal is to "unleash the power of female journalists to transform the global news media" impact.iwmf.org/give/177175/#!…
Can't look back on my career & not recognize the support of the South Asian Journalists Association (@sajahq). I joined SAJA in '03, when there were only a few Desis doing this. The scholarships, fellowships & network this 25-year-old org provides is vital
