1: A sedition case has been filed against Ramachandra Guha, Aparna Sen, Mani Ratnam, Anurag Kashyap, Shyam Benegal, Shubha Mudgal, Konkona Sensharma, and 42 others for urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take meaningful action against hate crimes.

2: In an open letter addressed to the Prime Minister on 23 July, the 49 personalities had cited government and other data to highlight the rise in hate crimes and decline in its convictions. They had also appealed for swift and sure justice for the victims.

3: The FIR was filed in Muzaffarpur, Bihar following a petition filed by an advocate claiming that the letter signed by the 49 had "tarnished the image of the country and undermined the impressive performance of the Prime Minister”.

4: Amnesty International India’s interactive website ‘Halt the Hate’ has found that reports of alleged hate crimes have witnessed the steepest rise in numbers since 2016. In 2019 alone, 181 incidents of alleged hate crimes have been recorded by the website.

5: Unfortunately, the true extent of hate crimes in India is unknown since the law – with some exceptions – does not recognise hate crimes as separate offences. The public denouncement of such crimes must, therefore, be encouraged and not criminalized.
