I’m in court for day five of the #sharif trial. First witness of the day is a Const. with EPS.

His task that night was check point. Searching for the suspect. He says he saw the uhaul truck around 11:30 PM. Noticed the suspect had a bruise on his forehead. Officer now identifies Sharif as the suspect he saw that night.

Officer testified that the suspect appeared to have been sweating profusely & looked nervous would not make eye contact. He said the injury in his forehead looked like it came from an airbag. He instructed the driver to pull over to the side of the road.

Another officer takes the suspect’s drivers license and goes into his police car. Shortly after, the uhaul takes off.

Officer now taking about the criminal flight. “The uhaul travelled at a high rate of speed. We were approx 20 metres behind it. I remember the uhaul traveling around vehicles, switching from lane to lane.”

“The accused travelled into oncoming lane to avoid vehicles infront of him. Approaching a stale red light on Jasper ave. There was heavy traffic. The accused continued through intersection.” He blows another stale red after that— nearly misses a small vehicle.

“He then made a right turn in an alley south of the pint. I observed a male on the ground. I did hear tactical members at first. That the accused had begun to run over pedestrians.”

“ I was not aware that he had struck additional pedestrians.”

Crown: “What went through you mind when vehicle took off?”

Officer: “We were unsure what was inside the vehicle. A lot of unknowns.
Personally, I believed there might have been a device inside the vehicle which could have gone off at any time. “

Officer now talking about when they pulled accused out of the windshield of the uhaul. He says they used tasers on the accused.

Crown asks what was the demeanor of the accused while he was in the police car?

Const. “He was quiet. I don’t believe he said anything. “

Sharif does cross examine this police officer. “I don’t want to make any comments. I don’t have any questions.”
