I told her that it was a special Xmas because I had given her the United States. My daughter hugged + kissed me + told me, ‘Mommy you are the best Christmas present I could have. As long as we have each other, nothing else matters.’ But on the 25th something different happened.
This video was taken by @unkyoka of @ACLU in February of this year jdays before we presented a group of 29 parents at the border demanding they be reunited with their children from whom they had been cruelly and illegally deported.
We are happy to report that we have since been able to reunite Luisa and Nery (featured in this video) as well as the rest of the parents with their children and they are currently pursuing their asylum claims as a family.
A new battle awaits them though as we help them navigate a system set up for them to fail in a country becoming increasingly driven by hate and white supremacy.
Let it be lost on no one that on this holiday centered around the birth of a refugee child whose parents were fleeing danger and persecution, the Trump Administration, not only had the audacity to cite the Bible in their defense of family separation . . .
. . . but are currently eviscerating the asylum system system as we know it and shirking all responsibility to protect the most vulnerable among us.
As we hold our loved ones close, we remind ourselves that there are still several people “celebrating” today in prison cells and refugee camps. Our hearts as well as our commitment to continue to fight against these injustices are forever with them. #saveasylum
