You know that Autism Speaks didn’t design their logo with the autistic community because, if they had, we would have instead focused them on redesigning their organization first.
Form follows function. The truth is that Autism Speaks has only one token autistic board member and only a few - if that - token autistic staff.
That frame is one reason why its programming is currently facing budget cuts, why it gets creative in positively telling the abysmal numbers hidden in its annual report, and why #AutismSpeaks continues to fail autistic people and our families day after day.
You’ve had 15 years. Fifteen years of autistic people and our families speaking out against your inefficiencies, your marginalization, and your silencing of autistic voices. Fifteen years and hundreds of millions of dollars spent in our name on whims & false assumptions about us.
We’ve waited 15 years. When we’ve tried to partner. You rejected our offers. When we’ve tried to lend a hand, you slapped it away.
Autistic people are done.
✅ Cut us a check for 1/1000th of what you’ve squandered and autistic people & our allies will return it a thousand fold.
Fifteen years. Autistic people have waited 15 years.
Why, though?
