1/Preparing to testify at the Ohio Statehouse about @BegunCenter’s #SAKI research that supports OH #SB162, a bill that would among other things, eliminate the statute of limitation for rape in Ohio. @MandelSchool
2/Unfortunately, in my nerdiness, I sat in the front, which is in camera shot. I must force myself to be on my best behavior. No tearing up paper. No “you lie!” Minimal eye rolls. No sleeping.
3/key points based our research in support: #1 serial sexual offending is far more common than previously thought and often spans decade. So: elimating SOL greater chance of catching and prosecuting to fullest eaten the possible. Offenders like Nathan Ford.
/4 research key point #2: success of Cuyahoga County SAK Task Force indicates with additional of forensic evidence, increased investigative resources, and stronger support for victims, convictions for decades-old sexual assaults are not only possible but likely.
/5 research key point #3: false reporting for rape is rare. We find this in our data as well. Around 4% or less. No reason to think elimating SOL will increase false reporting rates. Instead, many more victims choose not to engage in the CJS because of how traumatic it can be.
/6 research key finding #4: rapists don’t just commit sexual crimes, also have extensive criminal histories for other types of serious felonies. Dangerous offenders like Larry McGowan. Eliminating SOL can help get these dangerous offenders off the streets.
