Thinking about going back to school for a PhD? I’m going to share a few things I’ve learned since going back and what I would tell my past self about this process #AdrienTwitterTakeover
Having learned from how people can react to viral tweets about PhDs: these are my views

1) Seek past and current PhD students. And really listen to them
2) If you’re moving, make sure you have a solid community or support system around you.
3) Have an honest conversation about what taking a large pay cut means for your life #AdrienTwitterTakeover

4) goes along with number 3. Evaluate your financial health and goals. I was lucky. I can’t imagine doing this had I not saved up before starting.
5) if you have a solid relationship with more senior colleagues, talk to them. One of mine was pivotal in the application process

6) Maintain the relationships you’ve been working on over the last few or more years. Over the summer, I worked on a project in Senegal with my old team because I made sure to let them know I was interested in keeping the lines of communication open

7)If you’re a POC, speak to other POC. Because I GUARANTEE that their experience and views will be different. For example, I live in Boston. Living in Boston as a Black woman....I don’t have enough characters to talk about #AdrienTwitterTakeover

8) Remember that the sun sets on every day. So just try to make it to the next sunrise when it feels like you’re overwhelmed with the process #AdrienTwitterTakeover

9) Talk to people about their relationship with their mentors at your institution of interest. I brag about the people I claim as mentors all of the time. I’ve gotten something from them that I’ve never had in my life #AdrienTwitterTakeover

Thank you for joining me on my #SERTwitterTakeover #AdrienTwitterTakeover. It has been a pleasure. Keep an eye out for the symposia I mentioned earlier (epiresearch.org/annual-meeting…) as well as some other events (epiresearch.org/serlibrary/ser…)
