As part of the urgent week of action, calling for the compassionate release of Dr. Mutulu Shakur (@FreeDrMShakur), I published 3 essays encouraging Prison Reform advocates to “claim no easy victories,” by abandoning our Political Prisoners @teamroc @MeekMill @KimKardashian
The struggle to free political prisoners in the United States, is inextricably linked to the struggle to end mass incarceration, and @REFORM the Criminal Justice System. To pursue reform, without acknowledging political prisoners, is a grave injustice.
This is no different than @VanJones68 often stated reminder, that to pursue the legalization of marijuana, while there are thousands of folks still behind bars for marijuana, is an injustice.
Jay-Z asked to be held accountable, & this is what public accountability looks like. @TamikaDMallory @yandysmith @Mysonne @oldmanebro — if we are unwilling to unapologetically say “I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against.”
Then how can we be the voice of the people, when we refuse to speak truth to the power, in our own community? We all have to be held accountable—for in the end, “we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
I’ll link each my essays below, so you can read my words on the matter of abandoning our political prisoners, in favor of fashionable reform. Hopefully we all can find words on the matter, as well as the courage to speak them publicly @Mysonne @TamikaDMallory #FreeDrShakur
