Thanks, Backer 157! Today I want to rec Juliet Marillier’s Daughter of the Forest.
The first book of this extraordinary writer’s career, it immerses you in an emotional, complex Celtic retelling of the Six Swans.
Your hands will hurt as you read this book. #fairytalerecs
Thanks, Backer 158!
Let’s talk about Malinda Lo’s Ash, a gorgeous lesbian retelling of Cinderella about grief and faith in magic. The tense relationship between Ash & her fairy ‘godmother’ is just as important as her romance with the dreamy King’s Huntress. #fairytalerecs
Thank you, backer 159!
Not a novel, but Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes is a great book that for many kids is their first introduction to how grotty, bloodthirsty and hilarious fairy tales can actually be.
“My Prince, she cried, He Cuts Off Heads!” Classic. #fairytalerecs
Cheers, Backer 160!!!
Shout out for Witches Abroad by the late great Terry Pratchett which turns the fairy tale essence on its head: fairy godmothers are sinister for manipulating reality to match the stories, and the witches will save the day! With bananas in. #fairytalerecs
And we have a Backer 161 so time for more #fairytalerecs — thanks for your pledge!
Marina Warner’s From the Beast To The Blonde is an intensely important scholarly work on the history of fairy tales & women, & also incredibly readable. Blew my mind when I first encountered it!
Backer 162 has joined the party! Cheers.
Let me tell you about Rapunzel’s Revenge by Shannon & Nathan Hale, a fantastic graphic novel retelling Rapunzel’s story in a vivid Wild West background. Why yes, she does use her hair as a lasso. #fairytalerecs
