The recent ad campaign “Turbulence” portrays a fictional airline, "Honey Birdette Airlines." Still images show pouting flight attendants wearing red uniforms adorned with the airline logo - a silhouette of a woman's legs in the air, her feet in high heels.
Dead-eyed, slack-jawed flight attendants leer at semi-naked passengers on #HoneyBirdette airlines. Are we supposed to understand that this is an airline providing sexual services?
There is a long history of sexualising flight attendants, "Turbulence" and "Honey Birdette Airlines" perpetuate this.
@airasia is an airline frequently exploiting their flight attendants to lure customers.
Secretary of Flight Attendants Assoc. of Australia Jo-Ann Davidson said in 2010 that “raunchy” ads are offensive & place cabin crew at risk.
“This type of provocative advertising using cabin crew in this light isn’t tolerated in Australia & shouldn’t be acceptable anywhere else”
A survey carried out last year by the Transport Workers Union found sexual harassment to be a widespread problem.
The survey of over 400 airline cabin crew last year showed 65% of respondents had experienced sexual harassment, with 1 in 5 crew reporting more than 10 incidents.
