At a time when NHS and care home staff still lack PPE and workers are being sent back to work w/ out protection, the #DailyMail accuses teachers of cowardice & condemns their ‘militant ‘ unions for trying to protect staff & children. This is contemptible & divisive bollocks.
It’s supported by the likes of Isabel Oakeshott, and various Labour right dinosaurs including David Blunkett and Ian Aitken, all of whom have form in this. We’ve been fooled by a lot of things, let’s not be fooled by this ‘brave NHS workers’ versus ‘cowardly teachers’ bullshit.
Teachers are not cowards. They aren’t controlled by union ‘barons’. Their unions are not ‘militant’ for wanting to ensure proper protection is in place. We should be supporting our teachers just as we supported the NHS, because teachers care about children and parents.
And the attacks on teachers and unions are ultimately part of the ongoing effort to force people back to work and pretend that the battle has been won. Don’t be fooled. As difficult as things are, let’s not be divided by these crude attacks. Let’s stand by our teachers.
And let’s stand by their unions. Because if there was ever a time when unions were needed, it’s now. And in the coming months. Believe them. And if you doubt this, just take a good look at the calibre - and the politics - of the people who are attacking them.
