The worst thing for the government? The damage is now done.
This story has now lasted more than four days and is still growing legs. There is no sign of public anger abating and no sign that the government is taking the concerns on board.
Governments start to rot from the inside when they are seen as complacent, contemptuous of the people and out of touch. This government is showing all three in spades and everyone can see it.
Now, they’re trapped. If Cummings stays it’s a permanent reminder of how Johnson put his adviser before the country. If he goes it’ll be because he had to. Nobody will give them credit for doing the ‘right thing’ because none of them wanted to.
So there it is. Nothing will undo Johnson’s spectacular misjudgement. Nothing will undo the arrogance. Nothing will undo the rewriting of law to accommodate an adviser. Nothing will undo the refusal to apologise. Once the rot sets in, it stays.
