I fucking love rockets. Let me be clear. I love science and space and engineering and I've woken up at all hours to watch random launches over the years.
But I didn't watch yesterday's launch live, I couldn't. I was here, peacefully protesting the unlawful death of #GeorgeFloyd
Because it's honestly not the time to be celebrating an American launch for the 1st time in 9 years when our black brothers and sisters have been getting murdered for so much longer than that.
I built my career and got my education in a city practically built on racial disparity
When I ride Cleveland's public transit, I'm frequently the only white (adjacent) person on board. And 99% of the time, I'm the only one who doesn't get her ticket checked. I've watched countless kids, teens, and adults get arrested simply because they couldn't pay the $2 ticket
I don't know what my point is, and I don't know what to do. But I don't know if I can handle more happy-go-lucky "good for us! #LaunchAmerica!! 🇺🇲" posts from fellow sci-commers when all the windows on my street are shattered and we are so far from an equal America.
I know most of you are here because you like woodworking and swords and engineering, and hey, I love those things too.
But I can't be quiet and just talk about a rocket launch I honestly don't care about right now while my city is hurting so fucking bad.
