Yesterday, we explored what it means. Today, we'll focus on what consent IS NOT because a lot of people keep looking for loopholes to excuse bad intentions.

1. You do not have consent from another person if:
a.) The person is sleeping or unconscious
b.) You use threats or intimidation to coerce someone into having sexual relations.

c.) The person is incapacitated by drugs or alcohol
d.) You use a position of authority or trust, such as being someone's teacher, religious leader or employer.

e.) They change their mind — earlier consent doesn’t count as consent later

3. Words and phrases that indicate you DO NOT have consent:
• No
• Stop
• I don’t want to
• I don’t know
• I’m not sure
• I don’t think so

3b. Words and phrases that indicate you DO NOT have consent:
• I want to, but…
• This makes me uncomfortable
• I don’t want to do this anymore
• This feels wrong
• Maybe we should wait

4. Sometimes, words will not be spoken but NO still means NO. There are non-verbal cues that indicate you do NOT have consent. These include:
• pushing away
• pulling away
• shaking their head as if to say no
• silence

4b. Additional non-verbal cues that indicate you do NOT have consent include:
• not responding — just lying there motionless
• crying
• avoiding eye contact
• looking scared or sad
• reluctance/refusal to undress

Finally,
Even if a person appears to be giving nonverbal cues that make it seem like they’re into it and want to have sex, make sure you get verbal consent before continuing. Be sure and don’t just assume.
