Protestors in Portland, Oregon, tore down statue of George Washington, last night.

Right-wing twitter is in a fury.

Outrage!

Communist mobs!

Antifa terrorists!

Erasure of history!

Evil #1619Project!

Obama!

There may be honest objections to tearing down statues (rather than going through a longer process of discussion, "legal" removal), but most objections to taking down Washington are being made in bad faith.

How many people going on and on about "erasing history" have read @ericaadunbar Never Caught?

Safe bet: not a single one.

Subtitled The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave (yes, Martha was guilty, too), Dunbar shows their cruel pursuit of Ona Judge who in 1796 at age 23 escaped their enslavement and heroically was "never caught."

Since no one who is angry at taking down Washington knows a thing about Ona Judge, the issue isn't "erasing history."

It's about undoing erased history.

On #JuneteenthDay2020 I propose that the city of Portland put up a memorial to Ona Judge in place of George Washington.
