Oh, my.
You’re extremely busy. The world is full of things that desperately need your attention. But... #YouFindARock and it’s too good to let slip away.
It’s an opaque deep teal with no clear crystal shape.
It calls to you.
You know perfectly well that deep saturated colours are markers of heavy metals and on the Do Not Lick list.
But how dangerous is copper, anyway? Surely just a quick nibble is fine...
>
> Lick
Your eyes dart around, searching the area for those who would judge you for unadvisable rock-licking. Coast clear, you lick.
The dry, porous mineral sticks gently to your tongue. The hydrated copper sulfate is bitter.
You spit, nose wrinkling in distaste.
>
> Pet
You pet, enjoying the cognitive dissonance between its waxy-greasy lustre and rough texture of the porous mineral.
You casually scrape a nail against it, startled when you scratch a pale green-blue powder from the soft, brittle surface. Mohs hardness 2.5-3.5!
>
> Heft
You weigh the mineral in your hand, contemplating the worries of the world.
“Hmm,” you ponder. “Specific gravity 1.9, maybe 2.4 depending on copper content? Pretty light for an ore-bearing mineral!”
>
> SMASHY-SMASHY
Giving the gorgeous mineral a final pat, you slam down on it with your rock hammer.
The soft, brittle chryscolla shatters into countless shards, the edges conchoidal and sharp like broken glass.
You have destroyed something beautiful.
>
> Mourn
Once again, you realize too late that while you can always visit an emergency room, rocks don’t heal.
“I’m so sorry,” you whisper to the shards, pocketing a fragment as vow & reminder to be less destructive in the future.
You slink away in shame.
