AS AJIMOBI BECAME GOVERNOR
This is a reminder of how the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), led by Lam Adesina, using the Ajimobi candidacy, humbled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) out of government house, Agodi.
Governor Alao Akala is a casualty as he lost the election of 2011 to Abiola Ajimobi who governed Oyo State from 2011-2019.
By the time Ajimobi took the oath of office on 29 May 2011, the troubles of the PDP were on display.
There were ominous signs when the party held sway, just that the power equation in its favour prevented its wider disintegration.
Once the party lost power, the fissures widened as Ajimobi won a second term in 2015 and be the ‘constituted authority’.
That is not to say that Akala’s time was better than Ajimobi’s. It is to state that the factors behind Akala’s downfall also made Ajimobi a casualty of politics.
I thought we are casualties?
In 2003, Ajimobi became a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD). He was the Oyo State gubernatorial candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2007.
He lost to Akala and went back to the drawing board for the 2011 challenge. He was the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) when he flew away.
He died on Thursday 25 June 2020 having been effected with Covid -19.
He was buried on Sunday 28 June 2020.
He was 70.
He was Obilo’s sparring partner.
