Last week, the Brazilian Senate approved a #PLFakeNews bill that contains major threats to human rights. The bill is now in the Chamber of Deputies, who have an important chance to stop them. [1/7]

The bill contains a tech mandate—the "traceability rule"—that compels messaging apps to weaken security and privacy protections. Companies we rely on for secure messaging throughout the world would be forced by the law to comply or stop offering services to users in Brazil. [2/7]

The traceability rule forces messaging apps to track the metadata of any "massively forwarded" messages and retain it for 3 months, weakening safeguards for all users and opening the door for abuses. [3/7]

The bill assumes that any viral message is potentially suspicious. Online communication tools are critical to shed light on and spread public interest information, which the traceability rule undermines. #PLFakeNews [4/7]

The bill also forces social media and messaging companies to make private user logs remotely available to their staff in other countries, bypassing international cooperation mechanisms and safeguards. [5/7]

The remote access also reduces the company's ability to control vulnerabilities and unauthorized access in their servers on a global scale. [6/7]

These are just a couple of the problems with this bill. As it starts to be analyzed in Brazil's @camaradeputados, it's crucial MEPs stop these risks and enable a transparent and democratic debate. @RodrigoMaia [7/7] eff.org/deeplinks/2020…
