To say today's fiscal statement was underwhelming and disappointing is a significant understatement.

What should have been a major recovery package of at least £80bn+ in investment, failed to meet the scale of ambition needed to protect jobs and tackle this unprecedented crisis.

Worst of all - the Tory government is threatening Scotland's recovery by prematurely cutting off the furlough scheme for millions of workers, and withholding the crucial financial powers that Scotland needs to deliver tailored support for people, public services and businesses.

While other countries are extending support into 2021, the Tory government is ignoring Scotland's interests and putting people's jobs and livelihoods on the line by withdrawing this lifeline too soon - risking a raft of redundancies and lasting damage to our economy.

To quote one expert today - “Removing the furlough scheme before activity has recovered is like building three-quarters of a bridge and not finishing it ... Prematurely winding down the scheme risks having merely delayed job losses for millions of people.”

While Germany is investing 4% of GDP, the Chancellor's package didn't come close to delivering the funding needed. We will wait to see exactly how much new money will come to Scotland in Barnett consequentials - but early assessments suggest much is previously confirmed money.

This was also a missed opportunity to put fairness at the heart of the recovery. This crisis has exposed the deep inequalities caused by a decade of Tory austerity - but today we saw no real investment to reverse soaring child poverty or boost funding for the NHS and Social Care.

The SNP will continue to press the UK government to ensure Scotland has the powers and funds needed to protect jobs and deliver a stronger, fairer recovery. It's time the Tory government raised its ambitions.
