If you’re young enough you don’t remember but stories about gay people in any media let alone on Broadway were few and far between in 1977.
This was about representation in media as much as anything else plus it had a bad ass soundtrack.
It was literally sitting in the theater- when I realized there were other gay people as I see no real representation of homosexuals before other than the sneers and jokes.
The idea for a young gay man in his early teens to realize that he had not a.) invented homosexuality himself in a vacuum and b.) there was in fact people like me, who looks like me, in love like me and cared like me. That’s a huge deal and that’s what a gift the show was to me.
And for that - no matter how much fun you make - my adoration for this show, stands. I am truly grateful to Marvin Hamlisch and the cast who, at the time to take the risk of roles of gay characters which was a blacklist, career suicide, they made it OK for me. Ty
