Alright, so when I got out of jail I was fortunate to have most of my crew fucking waiting for me to surround me with love and fulfil all my needs. It was also one of the bigger jail support nights. Join me for my pitch for expanding our jail support into, well... a daily event.
Alright not "event." But waiting for comrades to get out of jail is hard. Being in jail is hard. Heckling cops while they drive home after their shift change is fun. We have literally hundreds of people who want to support frontliners, this is where we can funnel that engagement.
To clarify I know full well how much work a small group of people have done to get jail support doing - I am not trying to subvert their work at all. This is a call to the community to say, hey! This should be our responsibility as well. Get involved!
The nightly DA's are going strong, but we need more tactics to rebuild numbers. Heckling the cops after their shifts and utilizing that stressful time for emotional support/education/MAKING SURE CHUDS CANT HARASS PEOPLE can rebuild our momentum while still fucking with them.
There are some basic things I think ppl can provide without having to worry about too many logistical hurdles:
- food/water
- day Trimet passes
- cigarettes/personal vices
- social support
- OTC pain relief
- escorts to nearby areas
- zines/distractions for those waiting
I see a lot this could turn into, but let's start with what we know: Moms! Injured frontliners! People who cant sprint away from police! People get released all throughout the day and night, and YOU can come and help them feel supported and safe when they're released. #DefendPDX
You shouldn't have to be a recognized organizer to have a welcoming crowd when you are released from being kidnapped. We protect us!! We should maybe be more intentional about not being overwhelming for people who are freshly traumatized, but that's a convo for there.
Bottom line: I'm going to be at the JC on and off over the next few days to help coordinate community jail response and do problem solving. Trust me, I know complications and risks that come with this, but I think this is a critical step for our city.
ALSO I think this should be a community support system in every city. Anybody getting out of jail should have community waiting for them, and everyone waiting afraid for their loved one in jail should have the opportunity for company and answers for questions. Which reminds me!
Translators and ASL interpreters also have a role to play in support!!
