If the Big 12 plays against the SEC in some form this season it will give everyone a false sense of what life would be in the SEC for teams like OU or Texas, should they move there in the future. Why? Because it’s the actual hypothetical of dropping OU into the a SEC coming true.
If OU did join the SEC in 2025, that would be announced, at the latest, in 2023. Internally, it would be known before. Recruiting for OU starting in 2022 would be “as an SEC team.” Ergo, OU’s defensive recruiting, for example, would likely improve, if being SEC helps.
However, just playing in the SEC in 2020 with no lead time will be a true “can OU (or texas, etc) hang with SEC teams right now on a longer term basis?” And the answer is probably no. OU maybe can. But still may lack that DL depth to go a full season. So, it’ll be interesting.
And if we are honest, as OU fans, it may be rough. Not saying we won’t blast a bunch of those teams. We will. But beating LSU, Georgia, and Bama is gonna be tough, obviously. And the day we play on a level that would get us beat by Kansas St, we will get HAMMERED.
Other than all that realism/pessimism, let’s go! I’d love to play and show we can actually play with these guys! /fin
