Amidst all the Ethereum shitposting, I feel obliged to repost my sincere opinion.
I do not think originally it was intended to be a scam. There were people involved who probably really did have good intentions at first, including Vitalik. But they went in way over their heads when big money showed up...and lost the plot.
Vitalik is a smart young kid. But he surrounded himself with people who pumped his ego and didn't necessarily have the best intentions for him. This was in the era of the blockchain gospel, when everyone was preaching of how blockchains would fix everything wrong with the world.
I am actually amazed at how well he has dealt with it despite the fact. He totally lost the plot as well, but he hasn't gone completely insane. Most people that age faced with that sort of attention would have gone mad by now.
After all that many people have invested into Ethereum, the sunken costs fallacy comes strongly into play. Do not expect people who have invested so much into the idea to easily just abandon it, no matter how horrible it seems.
You can always be amused by shitposting about it. But also see it as a lesson in human nature, as a microcosm of humanity, and apply the lessons elsewhere.
