This is the second of three essays I’ve done on histories of American interwar fascism.

The first was this one, which came out at end of June, on why Trumpism can (and in my view should) be construed as American fascism. nybooks.com/daily/2020/06/…

This second one, about to come out with the @TheTLS, connects the story to Roth’s Plot Against America (and the new HBO adaptation).

The third one, coming out soon with @NewStatesman, takes the argument in a different direction, toward crowds, spectacle, and entertainment.

All 3 start with the same central facts and debates about the relationship between the Klan, American white supremacism, and European fascism, and then each branches out in different directions from that shared start, bringing in different aspects of the story.

Will be very interested to see how they compare in readers’ minds … (I will, of course, not choose a favorite from among my three babies.)

My @TheTLS essay on American interwar fascism and The Plot Against America is now up. the-tls.co.uk/articles/the-p…

Pleased to say the final of my three essays this summer on American fascism is now up at @NewStatesman. Each of them starts with the same key historical facts and then moves in different directions. This one has more novels and films! 🥳👍

I would love to think that this might be my final entry on American fascism ever. But I have a terrible feeling that history is not going to afford me that luxury.
