When I was in Morocco, I remember noticing some subtle ways that women were treated as inferior. And I remember at the time, I even found it amusing. 1/x
One example was my wife being asked, in a clothing store, which shirt she thought her husband would prefer her to have rather than which she wanted. Some were more serious. And I even found myself thinking it's nice to live some place that doesn't do that. 2/x
Of course, only a man could think that. Of course we do that in the US. In millions of small and not small ways. I'm sure you've all heard stories of women in tech who were questioned or doubted in ways men would almost certainly not have been. 3/x
My wife and I bought a car, with her doing most of the work. But all the paperwork comes to me. I get the calls from the dealership about service. And when we had unusual tire wear, they told my wife to tell me not to drive so aggressively. 4/x
She made the appointment. She drives the car. Why would they say that? And similar things have happened with all kinds of other major purchase. Every home buying couple has this experience. 5/x
This came to my attention today because I got a call from my bank. They wanted to let me know that they were re-opening their local branch near me and that I had a personal banking representative who wanted to introduce himself to me. 6/x
My wife opened that account. In her name. In person. I'm an additional authorized user. End thread. 7/7
