Something, or someone, is wrong here. The DoJ Inspector General called Crossfire Hurricane a counterintelligence (CI) investigation. Deputy AG Rosenstein described Crossfire Hurricane as a CI investigation to distinguish it from the Special Counsel's criminal probe. /1
The Page FISA applications describe the FBI investigation as a CI investigation. The Senate Intelligence Committee describes Crossfire Hurricane as a CI investigation.
But, John Durham's criminal information against Kevin Clinesmith says the FBI investigation was /2
a Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA) investigation? Is Durham deliberately trying to change the perception of what he is investigating because, aside from the low hanging fruit of Clinesmith (whose actions were actually uncovered by IG Horowitz), /3
we've seen no indication that he has the evidence needed to convict anyone else involved in Crossfire Hurricane of a crime?
And, BTW, Durham signed the Clinesmith Information as "Special Attorney to the Attorney General." What exactly is that position? It isn't anywhere /4
on the Justice Department organizational chart. Durham's signature line lists no affiliation to any Justice Department unit other than directly to William Barr. No wonder there has never been public disclosure of any order, memo or press release appointing Durham, /5
or describing what he is doing. Durham may yet pull the proverbial rabbit out of the hat for Barr and Trump, but, if so, there will always be perfectly legitimate questions and suspicion of how he came to catch that rabbit - or whether it's a rabbit at all. /6
