Did you know? August 21 was proposed as National Maritime Day.
It was the day when Indonesian independence army finally seized Indonesia ocean territory. At that time, Indonesian Navy has not been formed, so..
..the Association of Indonesian Marine Youth was the one who did it. The predecessor of Indonesian Navy called BKR Laut (Badan Keamanan Rakyat Laut) was finally formed later on September 10, 1945.
On September 23, 1963 a maritime conference was held, and it was established on 1964 as the official National Maritime Day of Indonesia.
Also on August 21 in Indonesia History, on year 1522, there was a treaty made between Portuguese and Sunda, known as Luso-Sundanese Treaty of Sunda Kalapa. The Portuguese will gain access to the more profitable pepper trade and to build a fort at the main port of Sunda Kalapa.
There were 2 copies of the treaties, one of the king of Sunda & the other one for the king of Portugal. Each copies were signed on August 21, 1522.
A padrão (tl : memorial stone) then was erected in (what was now) Tugu area in Jakarta.
The stone is now kept in the National Museum of Indonesia. But the Portuguese failed to keep their promise to come back the following year to build the said fort because of some troubles in Goa, Portuguese India. They didn't return to Sunda until 1526.
