So @FT reports that Sir Tim Barrow is leaving @UKMisBrussels to be part of the new structure at the top of @foreignoffice and @DFID_UK - congrats Sir Tim
Nothing too surprising about his appointment - although he has done the job before. He may benefit from a bit of grade inflation (he is a perm sec ranked ambassador). He has maintained relations with ministers where his predecessor, Ivan Rogers, did not
But is he really leaving in September? Courageous timing minister. This is negotiations crunch time.. the lead may be in London.. but is that the best time to be losing your top person in Brussels.. esp as Frost starts double-hatting. Hmm..
and who will take over? Barrow broke a run of two @hmtreasury alumnae.. but this is now a much more diplomatic job. It should be one of the top Ambassador jobs.. but no glitzy residence; no negotiations to get stuck into...
So an FCO diplomat with European credentials?.They may have decided already. There are candidates with suitable experience... won't hex them by naming.. or even maybe @AntoniaRomeoUK if she doesn't get Cab Sec (we're still waiting?)
But important that the apppointment shows the UK realises that the EU remains a crucial relationship. Especially as, Barrow apart, the top of the FCO looks v light on EU experience. ENDS
