Today, @bookcritics is holding a meeting to decide if Carlin Romano should stay on its Board after he disagreed with other members over the content of a statement supporting Black Lives Matter.
I think kicking him out would send a bad message. 1/6 thefire.org/the-case-of-ca…
As an organization devoted to literary expression, NBCC should be interested in preserving a culture of free speech.
NBCC is holding a meeting to invite its members to participate in cancel culture. Its members should reject that invitation. 2/6

Is this a cancellation? I think clearly yes — it fulfills 6 of 6 criteria set forth in this brilliant article by @jon_rauch. 3/6

I predict, unfortunately, that the NBCC will remove Carlin, & thus score another victory for cancel culture.
I also predict his removal from NBCC will be used as evidence that he should lose his professorship at @Penn, where some are already petitioning for his firing. 4/6
My fingers are crossed that I’m proven wrong. Maybe the NBCC will decide it’s useful to have a dissenter like Carlin among their fold and refuse to remove him.
It would send a strong signal that maybe this season of cancel culture doesn't have to last forever. 5/6
