Highly recommend: media.qmplus.qmul.ac.uk/media/t/1_6924… Courageous and honest podcast from @ArundiMahendran , @drdamingo & @RiyaEGeorge on spotting, challenging and coping with racial microaggressions in medicine.
This is why I love working in the #physicianassociate team @QMULBartsTheLon
2/ Takeaways:
1. You are not powerless.
2. Preserve your energy.
3. Ask: ‘What makes you say that?’.
4. Respond in writing.
3/
5. Trust your racism radar. To allies and witnesses - listen and believe the experiences of people experiencing racism. Do not invalidate by seeking to explain it away. A lifetime of experience gives POC an insight and understanding that we must listen to and act upon.
4/
6. Be Anti-Racist
7. Seize the current moment to create change
8. Allies, appreciate the burden that people of colour carry in working to be accepted within the impossible constraints of racism. Stand up for POC and use your power and privilege to get POC seats at the table.
5/
9. Racism against black people is particularly pernicious and widespread.
10. Racism is embedded in our institutions, and we are all cogs within this. It takes work and time to unpick this, so we need to work hard, recharge and keep going.
